Why cast film and a matched overlaminate matter on a fleet

Calendered film on a corrugated panel will lift at the edges. The material decision made at quotation stage determines whether a wrap lasts three years or three months.

Vehicle graphics fail in predictable ways, and almost all of them trace back to the film specification rather than the installation.

Cast versus calendered

Cast film is manufactured without the internal stress that calendered film carries. Under thermal cycling — and a vehicle panel in an Abu Dhabi summer cycles hard — calendered film tries to return to its original dimensions. On a flat panel it may cope. On a compound curve, a rivet line or a corrugated body it lifts, tunnels and pulls back from the edges.

The overlaminate is part of the system

A printed graphic without a cast overlaminate is not a complete specification. The laminate carries the UV protection, the abrasion resistance and much of the conformability. Manufacturers publish matched pairings for a reason, and mixing a laminate from one system onto a base film from another voids the published performance.

Climate derating

Durability figures published by film manufacturers are usually stated for temperate conditions. The Gulf sits in a high-UV band and real service life here is shorter than the headline figure. Any specification written for this market should be derated accordingly rather than quoting the datasheet number.

Consistency across a fleet

On a multi-vehicle programme the material specification should be recorded and locked at the outset, so the twentieth vehicle branded two years later still matches the first.
